"Not From The Mint  ............  Facsimiles,  Fakes and Forgeries"

The Yorkshire Numismatic Society will be hosting the 2017 BANS Congress at the elegant Crown Hotel located in the heart of Harrogate spa over the weekend of 7th to 9th April 2017.

As illustrated, the Crown is next to the Royal Pump Room Museum. The Mercer Art Gallery, chic Montpellier Quarter, Betty’s Tea Rooms and the Valley Gardens with its numerous springs are all within a couple of hundred yards. There are many examples of fine architecture nearby including the Royal Hall, the only surviving Kursaal in Britain. Visit the nearby Old Swan Hotel to discover the true identity of Mrs Teresa Neele. Cheltenham Parade has many fine restaurants and Bean & Bud, in Commercial Street serves excellent coffee and cakes. For those more adventurous a walk through Valley Gardens leads one to RHS Harlow Carr - one need not queue at their Betty’s Tea Rooms. Harrogate is a doorway to the scenic Yorkshire Dales and there are many Cistercian Abbeys to visit in North Yorkshire. Historic York is only 22 miles away and bustling Leeds only 15 (served by the excellent no. 36 bus).

The theme of the 2017 Congress is “Not from the Mint… Facsimiles, Fakes and Forgeries”. Experts in British counterfeits throughout the ages will give illustrated talks on the illicit, imitative and downright fraudulent in all the main historic periods of our coinage, up to the present day.

The programme will follow the conventional format with an excursion on Saturday afternoon and the Conference Dinner that evening. There will also be an auction and raffle to raise funds.

The Conference Brochure will include Congress information, brief articles and messages from our sponsors. The programme and tariffs for delegates will be issued shortly and it is hoped to keep costs at a comparable level to recent Congresses.

We look forward to seeing you in Harrogate.
