*** Conference Update ***

BANS Congress April 2017 – Harrogate, Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Numismatic Society will be hosting the 2017 British Association of Numismatic Societies Congress at the elegant Crown Hotel in the heart of Harrogate Spa over the weekend of 7th to 9th April 2017. The theme of the 2017 Congress is “Not from the Mint… Facsimiles, Fakes and Forgeries”. Experts in unofficial British ‘coinage’ throughout the ages will give illustrated talks on the illicit, imitative and downright fraudulent issues from Roman times to the current £1 coin.

Non-residential attendees are encouraged and exceptional day rates for single or multiple days are on offer. A complimentary conference brochure with a full conference guide and several informative articles will be available to all attendees. The following speakers are confirmed:
   
Chris Barker - the new £1 coin (The Royal Mint Lecture);

Adrian Marsden - Boring, Barbarous and Base: Recent Research on Irregular Radiates;

Vincent Drost  - struck copies of tetrarchic nummi  (The Linecar Memorial Lecture);

Tony Abramson - imitation and imitative 'sceats' (The CNG Lecture);

William MacKay - ‘Filling the Void’ : Danelaw imitations of the London monogram coinage of Alfred the Great. 

Phil Mernick -
Mostly made in Europe, medieval jettons used in Britain (The UK Numismatic Trust Lecture);

Tristan Griffin - a numismatic history of the English Civil War in Yorkshire;

Melinda Mays - York's 17th Century tokens and their issuers; and

Chris Comber -Henry VIII Irish harp coinages (Baldwin's of St James's Lecture).

On Saturday afternoon there will be an excursion to the market town of Ripon where visits to the Ripon Prison, Police and Courthouse Museums are planned, followed in the evening by the Conference Dinner with wine sponsored by Mark Rasmussen. An auction and raffle will follow the dinner.

The Crown Hotel is in central Harrogate, which is easily accessible by public transport and close to a number of well-known attractions such as the Royal Pump Room Museum, the Mercer Art Gallery and the chic Montpellier Quarter. Betty’s Tea Rooms and the Valley Gardens with its numerous springs are all within a couple of hundred yards of the hotel. Further information is available on the BANS 2017 website.
